<li>One of the 8 parts of speech.</li>
<li>Shows location, direction, or position.</li>
<li>Latin prepositions: ad (to, toward), in (in, on), ē/ex (out of, from), prope (near).</li>
<li>A preposition is <span style="text-decoration: underline;">always</span> paired with a <span style="text-decoration: underline;">noun</span>.</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>This pairing of (PREPOSITION + NOUN) has a special title: a <strong>prepositional phrase</strong>.</li>
<li>In Latin, the preposition has special power.  It FORCES the next word (the noun) to have an ending change.
<ol>
<li>e.g., the nominative form is &#8220;hortus&#8221;</li>
<li>but with &#8220;ad,&#8221; it becomes &#8220;ad hortum&#8221;</li>
<li>and with &#8220;in,&#8221; it becomes &#8220;in hortō&#8221;</li>

<li>Some Latin prepositions FORCE the noun to become ACCUSATIVE.  These are considered &#8220;accusative prepositions.&#8221;
